HOLY WEEK IN GUATEMALA

The Holy Week season in Guatemala is experienced in a very intense and particular way. It is a time of spiritual withdrawal, to reflect upon Jesus Christ's life, Passion, deth and glorious resurrection. The Passion Brotherhoods, Advocates and Cofraternities prepare themselves with great devotion and dedication during the whole year for the procession days of the images of Jesús Nazareno (the Nazarene), Cristo Yacente and La Santisima Virgen de Dolores.

These expressions of publoc faith are deeply rooted in most Guatemalans' spirituality and have been passed on from one generation to the next. The social phenomenon that occurs around a processional cortege is immense, a source of unity, given that families and neighbors gather to manufacture artistic carpets.

Processions in Guatemala gather millions of people, whose most profound feelings arise around these religious activities.
